Filter membranes and syringe filters are specialty consumables for analytical laboratories, QC operations and small-volume sample prep — covering disc membranes, syringe filters and coupon media. Disc membranes are available in 13, 25, 47, 90 and 142 mm diameters, in PTFE, PVDF, PES, Nylon66, and Cellulose Acetate, with retentions from 0.1μm to 0.45μm.

Syringe filters are single-use units combining a 0.2μm / 0.22μm / 0.45μm membrane with a PP housing, widely used for HPLC/UPLC sample prep, UV-Vis spectroscopy, sterile injection pre-filtration, and cell culture clarification. Coupon media are small square swatches of filter material used for compatibility testing and initial screening.

Typical applications: HPLC/UPLC/GC-MS sample preparation, small-volume sterile filtration of injectables and IV drips, sterile filtration of cell culture media, lab analytical pretreatment, QC solution clarification, drug dissolution testing (USP <711>), and diagnostic reagent sterilization.

Which syringe filter to choose for HPLC sample prep?
Aqueous samples: PES or Nylon66 (0.22μm or 0.45μm). Organic samples (methanol, acetonitrile, THF): PTFE. Strong acid/base: PTFE. Protein samples: low-binding PVDF or PES. Standard 25 mm diameter; switch to 13 mm for micro-volumes (<1 mL).
Difference between 0.45μm and 0.22μm disc membranes?
0.22μm is sterilizing-grade — captures 99.99% of bacteria. 0.45μm is clarifying-grade — removes particles but provides no sterilization guarantee. HPLC sample prep typically uses 0.45μm; sterile injectables and cell culture media require 0.22μm with integrity testing.
