PES (Polyethersulfone) capsule filters specially designed for biopharmaceutical and sterile manufacturing processes. Adopting an advanced asymmetric membrane structure, it has extremely low protein non-specific adsorption and excellent dirt holding capacity. With proven bacterial retention, it is the best choice for sterile filtration of vaccines, serum, antibiotics and water for injection (WFI).

Hold-up volume
Small (≈0.02 m²) ≈30 mL; mid (≈0.1 m²) ≈90 mL; 10" class (≈0.7 m²) ≈250 mL. Most of the hold-up is recoverable by blowing down through the open drain
Vent & drain
One polypropylene vent valve on top and one drain valve underneath, both hand-operated; the vent can take a hydrophobic membrane cap to keep the sterile boundary intact
Max operating temperature
Continuous service to 60 °C; withstands 121 °C saturated steam for sterilisation cycles

Recommended change-out ΔP
A single-use capsule cannot be backwashed or regenerated. Change out when ΔP reaches 3–5× the clean initial value or 2.0 bar (29 psi), whichever comes first
Sterilisation
Autoclave at 121 °C for 30 min, up to 3 cumulative cycles recommended; steam-in-place, EtO and gamma sterilisation are also available
Wetting & flushing
Naturally hydrophilic — it wets out on contact with WFI or buffer with no alcohol pre-wet; just open the vent fully and purge the air before start-up
Extractables & cleanliness
Flushed with purified water to conductivity and TOC limits before shipment; extractables, endotoxin (< 0.25 EU/mL) and TOC batch data available on request
Integrity test
100% integrity tested before shipment; bubble-point or diffusion testing can be run before and after use — a water-wet 0.2 µm hydrophilic membrane typically bubbles at ≥ 3.4 bar (50 psi)

Ports run 1/4"–1-1/2"; specify the bore at order (the available range depends on the capsule size). Connections are moulded into the polypropylene body, so the wetted path carries no metal parts.

The PES capsule is the last barrier in an aseptic process: sterile filtration of vaccines, serum, antibiotics and water for injection before filling or entry into the sterile core. It suits small-batch lines that change product often — a single-use capsule needs no separate housing and no cleaning validation between products.

Key characteristics

The highly asymmetric structure is the point of this capsule: the open upstream layer takes the large particles and the tight downstream layer does the final retention. That buys high initial flux and long life without giving up efficiency — in practice, fewer element changes per batch.

Non-specific protein binding is very low. For vaccines and biological reagents, active substance adsorbed onto the membrane is real yield loss, and that property is often worth more than flux itself. Ratings run from pre-filtration all the way to the sterilising grade, so one medium can cover both stages and compatibility only has to be qualified once.

A capsule is pressure-limited by its plastic shell, which sits below the rating of a cartridge in the same membrane. Size it against pump head and the surge when a downstream valve closes; the cartridge pressure figures do not carry over.
